AGNC Dividend: Fed Rate Hikes Threaten High Payout
28 Jun
Summary
- AGNC Investment's monthly dividend yields over 13.5%, more than 10 times the S&P 500.
- Federal Reserve's potential rate hikes due to rising inflation pressure MBS values.
- AGNC's stock trades at a premium to book value, enabling accretive new investments.

AGNC Investment (NASDAQ: AGNC) offers a substantial monthly dividend yielding over 13.5%. This high payout, significantly exceeding the S&P 500's yield, has been maintained since its 2020 reset. However, recent signals from the Federal Reserve suggest a potential shift away from rate cuts towards possible hikes, a move that could challenge AGNC's dividend sustainability.
The Federal Reserve has maintained its stance on interest rates this year, deviating from earlier expectations of cuts. Persistent inflation, with core inflation reaching 3.4% last month, has prompted the Fed to remove language indicating a bias toward future rate reductions, hinting instead at potential increases. This sentiment shift directly impacts the Agency MBS market, AGNC's sole investment focus.
Higher mortgage rates, now around 6.5%, are projected to lower Agency MBS supply, putting downward pressure on the value of existing lower-yield MBS. If the Fed raises rates, this pressure would intensify. Despite a 5.6% decline in its tangible book value per share to $8.38, AGNC's stock has traded at a premium to book value. The REIT capitalized on this by issuing $400 million in new shares, deploying capital at an accretive levered return of approximately 16%.
