The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has launched a significant program to bolster Serbia's water security and agricultural resilience. This initiative involves nearly US$100 million in concessional financing, specifically targeting irrigation infrastructure across five Serbian regions.
The development project encompasses 122,432 hectares of agricultural land. It includes the construction and upgrade of 17 irrigation canals spanning over 500 kilometers and more than 60 pumping stations, ensuring better water access.
This investment is vital for improving flood control and establishing more dependable agricultural production. The Serbian Minister of Agriculture highlighted the importance of irrigation due to climate change, noting the program's role in boosting production and revenues.
ADFD's Director General emphasized water security as a cornerstone of resilient agriculture, particularly with evolving climate patterns. This partnership with Serbia underscores a global commitment to securing water for agricultural needs and fostering farmer confidence.
Furthermore, the program aligns with ADFD's broader water security objectives, advanced by the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform. Launched in January 2026, this platform aims to mobilize US$2 billion to support water and sanitation projects globally, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goal 6.
