Summary
- Five-year pact ensures domestic AK-203 rifle ammunition supply.
- Agreement integrates domestic supply chain for rifle program.
- Strengthens India's self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
A significant five-year agreement has been finalized between Adani Defence and Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) to produce ammunition for AK-203 rifles within India. This pact establishes an integrated domestic supply chain, ensuring a steady availability of 7.62x39 mm ammunition for the AK-203 program.
The collaboration marks a pivotal step in bolstering India's defence manufacturing ecosystem. It pairs rifle production, handled by IRRPL in Korwa, Uttar Pradesh, with ammunition manufacturing by Adani Defence in Kanpur.
IRRPL, established in 2019 as a joint venture between Indian and Russian entities, is responsible for the indigenous production of AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces. The Ministry of Defence has awarded IRRPL a contract for over 600,000 rifles.
This agreement significantly enhances domestic capabilities in small-calibre ammunition manufacturing, aligning with the government's push for greater self-reliance ('Aatmanirbhar Bharat') in defence production and reducing dependence on external sources.
