Adani Airports Eye $1.3B Global Investment

A consortium of international investors, including prominent names like Temasek and Alpha Wave, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to invest approximately $1.3 billion in Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL). This potential investment pegs AAHL's valuation at an estimated $18 billion, reflecting significant market confidence in the future of air travel in India.

The discussions involve four investors, all betting on continued growth in India's aviation sector. However, the deal faces potential hurdles, primarily concerning valuation expectations, as Adani management seeks a premium exceeding $20 billion. Some investors have also proposed structured investments with guaranteed returns, a condition Adani has reportedly declined.

This proposed equity fundraising marks the first external investment of its kind for the airports business. Its successful conclusion is anticipated to occur after the US Department of Justice makes a ruling on alleged bribery and fraud charges against chairman Gautam Adani and nephew Sagar Adani. Recent reports suggest these charges are expected to be dropped, potentially clearing a significant obstacle.

Adani Group entered the airport management sector in 2019 and currently operates eight airports across India, handling 23% of the nation's passenger traffic. The group has outlined a substantial capital expenditure plan, with a significant portion allocated to airport development, including a new terminal in Ahmedabad and accelerating Phase 2 development at Navi Mumbai airport.
