- Crypto unit rebranded from a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier.
- Fund raised nearly $10 billion since its 2018 launch.
- Broader mandate includes AI, robotics, and new networks.
Andreessen Horowitz's digital asset unit, formerly known as a16z Crypto, has been renamed a16z Frontier. This rebranding indicates a strategic pivot, moving beyond a sole focus on blockchain technology. The practice, led by Chris Dixon, has successfully raised nearly $10 billion across five funds since its inception in 2018.
While the team has backed significant wins in the crypto space, including Coinbase, the venture capital firm is now broadening its investment mandate. The new focus encompasses emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics, alongside "new kinds of networks" designed to connect humans and machines.
Despite the name change, a16z Frontier is not completely departing from its roots. General Partner Chris Dixon noted that blockchain technology may still play a role by providing "native economic capabilities" to these new networks. Key figures in the group include general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet, while early investor Ali Yahya has departed.
