Summary
- Automakers reported more sales gains than losses in May 2026.
- Mazda achieved a 35% sales increase, its best month since July 2025.
- Hybrid vehicles significantly boosted sales for brands like Hyundai.

For the first time in 2026, a majority of automakers reported sales gains in May, with a pronounced consumer preference for hybrid vehicles fueling the market. Mazda emerged as a significant winner, posting a 35 percent increase in sales compared to May 2025, marking its best sales month since July 2025. Every vehicle in Mazda's North American lineup saw double-digit sales growth.
American Honda also experienced a positive May, with overall sales up 9.9 percent, bolstered by strong performance in passenger cars and the Acura luxury division. Hyundai North America reported a 3 percent increase, largely propelled by its hybrid and all-electric models, achieving its best-ever month for hybrid vehicle sales, up 90 percent year-over-year.
Conversely, Toyota Motor North America reported a slight decrease of 0.6 percent. Production challenges affected its top-selling RAV4 compact SUV, which declined 26 percent. Lexus also saw a substantial drop of 36 percent, partly due to a model changeover for the ES sedan. General Motors and Stellantis did not release monthly sales figures.
