Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, has faced scrutiny over the use of taxpayer funds for significant pitch upgrades. Documents reveal that initial grant assessments in 2022, part of an £18 million deal, did not reference the pitch works.
The club spent £1.7 million on the pitch last summer, installing new drainage, heating, and fibre stitching. This expenditure was retrospectively included in a September 2025 contract that detailed the full £18 million grant.
This late addition to funding agreements has sparked questions about whether Wrexham AFC received undue flexibility in spending public money. Experts suggest that the club's improved financial standing by 2025, with new investments and promotion to the Championship, could have warranted a re-evaluation of the grant amount.
Concerns have also been raised about the council's initial assessment of subsidy control principles for the £3.8 million grant tranche awarded in February 2022, with some reports indicating a lack of thorough due diligence at the time.
