USPS Confirms Nationwide 24-Hour Closure for Columbus Day Holiday
6 Oct, 2025
Summary
- All 33,780 US post offices to close on October 13 for Columbus Day
- USPS says operations will continue despite potential government shutdown
- Banks and most businesses will also be closed for the federal holiday

In a few weeks, on October 13, every single post office in the United States will be shutting its doors for a 24-hour period. This nationwide closure is part of the United States Postal Service's official federal holiday schedule, which means there will be no mail delivery, retail services, or package processing on that day.
The USPS has confirmed that this planned shutdown has nothing to do with a potential government shutdown. The agency stated that its operations will continue as normal even if federal agencies face a funding lapse, as the Postal Service is an independent entity that is generally funded through the sale of its products and services, not tax dollars.
While post offices will be closed, the Columbus Day federal holiday will also see the closure of most banks and businesses across the country. The holiday, which is observed on the second Monday of October, gives many workers a long weekend. In recent years, some states and cities have also recognized the day as Indigenous Peoples' Day, aiming to honor both the legacy of explorer Christopher Columbus and the history of Native American communities.
