MSME Claims Surge 31%: Monsoon and Digital Speed Up Injuries
30 Apr
Summary
- MSME workplace injury claims rose 31% in FY 2025-26.
- Maharashtra leads with 20.9% of all MSME policies.
- Monsoon season accounts for 43% of claims due to outdoor hazards.

In fiscal year 2025-26, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) experienced a 31% surge in workplace injury claims. This increase is attributed to heightened business activity, improved reporting mechanisms, and faster digital adoption in the insurance sector. The BimaKavach Workplace Risk Report 2026, analyzing over 6,000 MSMEs, highlights these trends.
Maharashtra led in policy distribution, accounting for 20.9% of all policies, followed by Gujarat, Karnataka, and Delhi. Manufacturing and factory operations reported the highest number of claims, primarily due to machinery accidents and falls. Conversely, IT companies showed minimal claims despite a substantial policy base.
The monsoon season, from June to September, was identified as a peak period for claims, representing 43% of the annual total. This is linked to increased outdoor hazards and slippery working environments, with July being the busiest month. Despite this, 94.6% of MSMEs purchase workmen's compensation insurance mainly for regulatory compliance.
Digital advancements have drastically reduced insurance issuance times. Currently, 69.1% of policies are issued the same day, and over 82% are activated within three days, a significant improvement from previous turnaround times. This digitalization is making risk exposure more visible and encouraging proactive risk management among MSMEs.
