In 2023, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a project to establish seafood plazas operated by women's self-help groups along Mahim Beach. This initiative aimed to promote local cuisine and boost tourism.
The project began with six stalls but has since expanded to 13, all managed by around 130 women from the nearby Mahim Koliwada. These women, many of whom were previously homemakers, now engage in the entire business process, from sourcing fresh seafood at Sassoon Docks starting at 3 am to preparing and selling it at the plaza.
The Mahim Seafood Plaza, situated against the scenic Arabian Sea, offers a variety of Koli culinary delights including Thalis, Curries, and Tawa Fry preparations. Visitors can savor fresh catches like Pomfret, Surmai, Lobster, and Prawns. The plaza is open on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Initially met with a modest response, the business gained significant traction through social media, with viral reels spreading awareness of the Koliwada's offerings. On weekends, the plaza attracts over 3,000 customers, extending its reach to visitors from Pune, Nashik, and Palghar.
This venture has provided the women with substantial financial independence and a sense of empowerment. With plans to replicate this model in Versova and Colaba, the BMC aims to further support local communities and enhance tourism.
