7 May
Summary
- India is auditing 101 cities to assess ease of living.
- The BRICS Summit in Bengaluru focuses on urban mobility.
- Urban mobility challenges cost commuters up to 180 hours yearly.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India is undertaking a significant audit of 101 cities to evaluate the ease of living experienced by citizens. This assessment focuses on quality of life, accessibility, sustainability, and overall perception.
This audit is central to the 5th BRICS Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) Leaders' Summit, currently underway in Bengaluru. Hosted by India under the theme 'Ease of Living with a Focus on Urban Mobility,' the three-day event convenes 42 delegates from BRICS nations. They aim to share best practices and strengthen public financial oversight.
Urban mobility emerged as a critical discussion point, with global congestion indices rising to 20-25% by 2025. This congestion results in significant productivity losses, costing urban commuters between 100 and 180 hours annually. The CAG highlighted that effective urban mobility requires integrated systems, not just infrastructure.
Beyond traditional audits, SAI India is evolving its mandate to offer value-added products. The BRICS summit, representing over 3 billion people, will conclude with the adoption of a work plan and the Bengaluru Declaration, aiming to address common urban challenges faced by member nations.
