Hospitals at Risk: Medicaid Cuts Threaten Closures
6 May
Summary
- Several local hospitals may close due to Medicaid funding cuts.
- A consumer report identified hospitals with high Medicaid reliance.
- Hospitals cite integrated systems and call analysis flawed.

Several hospitals in Southwestern Pennsylvania are facing potential closure due to recent cuts in Medicaid and other government health programs. A report by Public Citizen, a consumer watchdog, identified UPMC McKeesport, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Greene, and Highlands Hospital in Connellsville as being at risk. The report's criteria included hospitals with over 20% of their payer mix from Medicaid, CHIP, and low-income programs between 2022 and 2024, alongside negative net profit margins.
UPMC has disputed the report's methodology, stating that its hospitals operate as part of a strong, integrated system, not as standalone entities. A spokesperson emphasized that this "systemness" ensures stability and continued high-quality care for patients across more than 40 hospitals. Penn Highlands Healthcare, which includes Highlands Hospital, acknowledged the challenges facing rural healthcare and called for additional government support to maintain services.
Public Citizen has not yet responded to requests for comment. The situation highlights the precarious financial state of some healthcare providers, particularly those serving vulnerable populations reliant on government-funded insurance. The stability of these essential community services remains a significant concern.
