Nebraska Town Revitalized by Housing Boom

The rural Nebraska town of Bertrand has seen a significant resurgence thanks to innovative housing solutions. After 16 years without new construction, a fiveplex called Sunset View Villas opened in 2024, providing much-needed rental units and sparking further economic activity. This development was crucial for the survival of towns like Bertrand, which have struggled with housing shortages.

In recognition of its efforts, Bertrand received a Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund Award in April 2026. The state award, established in 2018, highlights successful projects leveraging state housing funds. The $1.1 million Sunset View Villas project, spearheaded by the Bertrand Housing Authority and supported by a $525,000 state grant in 2022, revitalized an old mobile home park and addressed an urgent need for workforce and family housing.

Bertrand Community Builders, an investment group formed in 2022, also played a key role by renovating a bungalow and undertaking other property developments. This community-driven approach, involving local leaders and residents, has not only filled vacant properties but also encouraged renovations and attracted new businesses and younger residents back to town, signaling a promising revitalization.

While challenges like recruiting construction companies and skilled workers persist, the town is experiencing new momentum. Initiatives like a trades mentoring program in schools aim to retain young talent. The revitalization efforts, including new community events and infrastructure projects, indicate a positive outlook for Bertrand's future.
