Air India CEO Race Heats Up: Internal Candidate Leads
2 May
Summary
- Nipun Aggarwal is a contender to replace Campbell Wilson as CEO.
- Two expat airline executives are also shortlisted for the CEO role.
- Tata Group faces significant financial challenges with expected losses.

Nipun Aggarwal, Air India's chief commercial and transformation officer, is a frontrunner to become the airline's next chief executive officer, succeeding Campbell Wilson. The Tata Group, which owns Air India, is reportedly in the final stages of selecting a successor. Two foreign airline executives are also on the shortlist. Aggarwal, who has a background in investment banking, joined Air India after leading the team that facilitated its acquisition by Tata in 2021.
He has been instrumental in the airline's growth initiatives, including negotiating aircraft deals and developing new routes. Aggarwal also chairs the low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express. The Tata Group faces considerable financial headwinds, with losses projected to exceed ₹20,000 crore by FY26. This comes after a tumultuous year marked by regulatory scrutiny and operational challenges.
External factors such as rising jet fuel prices due to conflicts in West Asia are exacerbating Air India's financial strain. Furthermore, the closure of Pakistani airspace has forced longer flight paths for European and North American routes, increasing operational costs and fuel consumption for the carrier. Flights to North America now require additional stops, further impacting expenses.
