Summary
- James Gunn says Viola Davis' Amanda Waller series is still in development
- Peacemaker season 2 has an easier path forward from the previous DCEU
- Gunn cites "quality" as the top priority, with scripts needing to be finished before production

As of August 31st, 2025, James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has provided an update on the status of Viola Davis' Amanda Waller series. Gunn states that he and his co-CEO Peter Safran are still working on the project, but it has not been the "fastest" development process.
Despite the challenges with the Waller series, Gunn and Safran have found more success in continuing the story of John Cena's Peacemaker character. Gunn explains that the second season of Peacemaker will dive deeper into the character's journey, shifting from "coming to terms" with his demons in the first season to finally "confronting them head-on."
Gunn also emphasizes the importance of script quality over speed, noting that unlike most studios, DC Studios will not start production on a project until the script is finished. This approach, he says, is a "variety of reasons" behind the "shuffling" of the release order, with Peacemaker season 2 premiering ahead of the Waller series.
Safran echoed Gunn's sentiments earlier this year, stating that the Waller project has faced its "fair share of hurdles" and that the team has taken "a couple of cracks at it" without being able to "land" on a satisfactory script. Despite these challenges, Gunn remains optimistic about Viola Davis' return as the formidable Amanda Waller, saying he "can't wait to see [her] put on their Waller pants again."
