Uttar Pradesh Greenlights Plan to Preserve Malaviya's Birthplace

The ancestral home of Bharat Ratna Madan Mohan Malaviya, one of India's greatest educationists and cultural reformers, is set to be developed into a memorial in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Malaviya, a key figure in the freedom movement, was born in this house on December 25, 1861.

The Uttar Pradesh government has now taken the initiative to preserve and present Malaviya's legacy in a befitting manner. The state has assigned joint responsibility to the public works department, municipal corporation, department of culture, and revenue department to start the work on the memorial.

Recently, a four-member committee formed under the supervision of the district magistrate inspected the site and submitted its recommendations to the state government. The file detailing the memorial's scope, features, and required area has already been sent to Lucknow for approval, and the concerned departments have been instructed to begin the preparatory work.

The initiative was originally proposed by late Justice Giridhar Malaviya, Madan Mohan Malaviya's grandson, during a meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Although Justice Malaviya passed away before the proposal could be finalized, the state government has now given the green signal to the project.

The house where Mahamana, as Malaviya was called, was born still contains several artefacts from his life. Two families of Malaviya's descendants continue to reside in parts of the property, while a section has been sold and modern construction has taken place. However, the core part of the house remains untouched and intact.
