In August 2025, the highly anticipated final installment of the Conjuring horror franchise, titled The Conjuring: Last Rites, is set to hit theaters. The film will once again feature the return of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, portrayed by actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.
This time, the Warrens will be tackling the infamous haunting that affected the Smurl family in the 1980s. According to a May 2025 interview with Wilson, the Smurl family's story has been on the Conjuring team's radar for some time. "We've known about this one for a long time," the actor revealed. "Then writers are playing around with how it affects the family and what's going on in the family's life. That's where we can really theatricalize it. We're not making a documentary."
The Smurl family, consisting of parents Jack and Janet and their four children, experienced a range of strange occurrences after moving into a duplex home in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, in 1973. These included loud noises, bad odors, and even an alleged demon that threw their family dog into a wall, shook their mattress, and assaulted family members. The Warrens eventually investigated the case in 1986 and claimed to have encountered multiple paranormal presences, but were unable to fully rid the home of the demon.
