Summary
- Milly Alcock cast as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El in January 2024
- Supergirl film set for June 2026 release, directed by Craig Gillespie
- Gunn teases Supergirl's "darker, lonelier upbringing" compared to Superman

In a move to expand the DC Universe beyond Superman, studio head and director James Gunn has announced that Milly Alcock will play the role of Supergirl in an upcoming film set for release in June 2026. Alcock, who gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's House of the Dragon, will take on the mantle of Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin.
While Supergirl shares the same Kryptonian roots as the Man of Steel, Gunn has revealed that her journey will be markedly different. "She's a mess. A total mess," the director explained, noting that Supergirl's upbringing has been "darker and lonelier" compared to Superman's loving and supportive environment. This darker tone is expected to add an emotional and action-packed chapter to the expanding DC cinematic universe.
The Supergirl film, initially announced as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Craig Gillespie, known for his work on I, Tonya and Cruella. The project is part of a larger wave of DC Studios content, including the second season of Peacemaker and the upcoming series Lanterns, both set to premiere on HBO.
With Alcock's casting and Gunn's promise of a more traumatic and complex Supergirl, fans can anticipate a fresh and compelling take on the iconic Kryptonian heroine when the film hits theaters in 2026.
