Sholay Star Refused Pay, Got AC Instead as Ramesh Sippy's Gift

In August 2025, the iconic Bollywood film Sholay celebrated its 50th anniversary. The making of the movie was a highly memorable affair, and new trivia continues to surface even after five decades. Recently, actor Sachin Pilgaonkar, who played the role of Ahmed in the film, opened up about his experience.

Pilgaonkar revealed that he worked for free on Sholay, refusing to accept any payment for his role. He shared that his relationship with director Ramesh Sippy has always been that of a student and guru, and the bond meant more to him than money. Instead of a fee, Sippy gifted Pilgaonkar something special - his first-ever air conditioner. Sleeping in air conditioning was a luxury back then, and Pilgaonkar admits he hasn't been able to sleep without an AC since 1975, all thanks to Sholay.

The actor also recalled how Amitabh Bachchan, his co-star, helped him in a crucial 'dead' scene. Bachchan whispered a small but thoughtful piece of advice, telling Pilgaonkar to keep his body loose so it would be easier for the others to pick him up and put him down. This little moment taught the young actor an important lesson about acting, even in a 'dead' role.
