Sankarshan Thakur, the esteemed editor of the Kolkata-based The Telegraph newspaper, passed away on Monday, September 4th, 2025. He was 63 years old.
Thakur, born in Patna in 1962, had a distinguished journalism career spanning over four decades. He began his career with the SUNDAY magazine in 1984 and went on to establish himself as a prominent political analyst and author. Thakur wrote several acclaimed works, including the political biography "Subaltern Saheb" on Lalu Prasad Yadav and the political diptych "The Brothers Bihari" on Lalu and Nitish Kumar. He also published monographs on the Kargil War, Pakistan, and caste-based honor killings in Uttar Pradesh.
Tributes poured in for Thakur following the news of his passing. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media to pay his respects, describing Thakur as a "delightfully brilliant writer" whose "numerous articles on Bihar as well as J&K established his reputation." Ramesh added that Thakur belonged to a "breed that is already endangered" - liberal, democratic, secular, and pluralistic defenders of India.
