National Award Winner Shilpa Rao Advocates for Timeless Music

In August 2025, acclaimed singer Shilpa Rao was in the city for a private concert, just days after winning the National Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her song "Chaleya" from the film Jawan. Seated in her 30th-floor suite, Rao reflected on her award win and shared her perspectives on the state of the music industry.

Rao expressed that her first thoughts upon receiving the honor were of her parents and guru, the people who have supported her throughout her journey. She recalled how her parents were overjoyed at the news, noting that their happiness often exceeds her own.

The singer emphasized that for her, every song requires careful attention to find its emotional core, regardless of whether it's a Bollywood hit or a regional composition. Rao believes that "catching the emotion of a song is the most difficult part" and that the song must be allowed to "marinate" before recording to bring out its true energy.

In a world increasingly focused on reels, views, and virality, Rao prefers to take a more measured approach. She argued that art cannot be reduced to a one-minute clip, as it requires time and attention to be truly appreciated. The singer stressed the importance of balance, stating that not every day needs to be productive and that rest and reset are crucial.

Rao's admiration for Bengal's artistic richness extends beyond music. She marveled at the respect the region gives to various art forms, from painting and dance to even cooking, where art is seen as an integral part of daily life, not just an "extra" pursuit. The singer is excited to continue her work in Tollywood, having recently lent her vocals to the title track of the upcoming film Bibi Payra.
