Marvel Boss Unveils Plan to Revive MCU After Box Office Slump
20 Jul
Summary
- Marvel Studios to reduce MCU output to one live-action show per year
- Feige sees hope in rival studio's Superman success, believes comic book movies can rebound
- Marvel scaling down production costs by over 30% to address recent underperformance

In the wake of recent box office underperformance for Marvel Studios, including films like "Eternals," "Thunderbolts," and "The Marvels," Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has unveiled a plan to revive the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Feige says the studio will be scaling back its output, reducing the number of live-action MCU shows on Disney+ to just one per year. This comes as the MCU has expanded rapidly in recent years, with 102 hours of content between films and series produced since the end of "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019.
Despite the recent slump, Feige remains optimistic about the future of comic book movies, pointing to the recent global success of rival studio's "Man of Steel" as evidence that superhero fatigue is not a universal problem. He believes the MCU is poised for a rebound, with the studio's first $100 million-plus opener planned for 2025 with "Fantastic Four: First Steps."
To address the recent underperformance, Marvel has also taken steps to significantly reduce its production costs, cutting budgets by over 30% compared to 2022 and 2023. The studio has studied the efficient production methods used on films like "The Creator" and implemented changes to keep costs down while maintaining visual effects quality.
Feige acknowledges that the grand cross-platform storytelling plan between Disney+ series and theatrical films did not work as intended, with the unfamiliarity of Disney+ characters in "The Marvels" contributing to its lackluster box office performance. The studio is now focused on a more streamlined approach to ensure moviegoers can easily follow the narrative.
Despite the challenges, Feige remains proud of the MCU's experimentation and evolution, citing successes like "WandaVision" and "Loki" on Disney+. As the franchise looks to the future, Feige is confident that the MCU can bounce back stronger than ever.
