25 Jul
Summary
- Mackie was shocked to receive an Emmy nomination, thinking a "white dude" got it
- Mackie has a history of co-starring with actors who later receive major award nominations
- Mackie is honored to be nominated alongside industry legends like Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese

In a recent interview, actor Anthony Mackie expressed surprise at receiving an Emmy nomination this month. Mackie, who stars in the Disney+ series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," said he was at work when his co-workers congratulated him on the nomination, and he initially thought a "white dude" had been recognized instead.
Mackie's reaction stems from his history of co-starring with actors who later receive major award nominations. In 2006, he co-starred with Ryan Gosling in the film "Half Nelson," for which Gosling received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Then in 2008, Mackie co-starred with Jeremy Renner in "The Hurt Locker," and Renner was subsequently nominated for his first Oscar.
Most recently, Mackie co-starred with Bryan Cranston in the 2016 TV movie "All the Way," and Cranston was nominated for an Emmy for his performance. Mackie jokingly referred to himself as the "secret sauce" behind these actors' award success.
While honored by the nomination, Mackie acknowledged the stiff competition he faces, noting that he expects either Ron Howard or Martin Scorsese to win the Emmy in his category. "Winning is being nominated against Scorsese and Ron Howard," Mackie said. "Because one of them gonna have to say, 'Damn, I lost to Anthony Mackie.'"
