In a recent interview, director James Gunn provided insight into the messy transition of the Superman role in the DC Universe. Gunn revealed that despite the announcement of Henry Cavill's return as the Man of Steel, the plan was already in place for Gunn to cast a new actor, David Corenswet, in the lead role for his upcoming DCU debut film.
Gunn explained that the miscommunication was due to a sector of the studio trying to "force" their own vision, which was "never part of the equation." To resolve the situation, Gunn decided to have an open discussion with Cavill, who Gunn described as "an absolute gentleman" about the change.
While Cavill had portrayed Superman across three DC films from 2013 to 2017, Gunn's new DCU film will feature Corenswet in the iconic role. The cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and several other notable actors.
Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, Gunn hinted at the possibility of using Cavill in future DCU projects, suggesting that the door may not be completely closed on the beloved actor's Superman tenure.
