In a recent interview, Chef George Geary, who worked at a grocery store near Paramount Studios in 1985, shares the behind-the-scenes story of how he shaped the iconic cheesecake moments on the beloved sitcom The Golden Girls.
Geary, who was in his 20s at the time, was initially asked to make a wedding cake for the show's pilot episode. When the series was picked up, he continued providing food for various episodes, including a request for "something weird" in the 22nd episode of the first season. Geary suggested cheesecake over carrot cake, as he felt the former would look better on camera. His suggestion stuck, and Geary ended up making up to 7 cheesecakes per episode for the late-night filming.
However, not all the Golden Girls were fans of the dessert. Bea Arthur, who played Dorothy Zbornack, reportedly disliked cheesecake and was only seen taking a real bite in one episode. In contrast, Geary says he gravitated towards the character of Sophia Petrillo, played by the late Estelle Getty, when watching the show.
Despite the show's initial run from 1985 to 1992, Geary did not realize at the time that The Golden Girls would become as iconic as it has. Today, the series remains popular, with many viewers recalling watching it with their grandparents when they were young.
