16 Aug
Summary
- Director Mark Waters was not invited to work on the Freaky Friday sequel
- Waters had hoped to be involved in some capacity, even as an executive producer
- He ended up focusing on other projects after realizing he would not be part of the sequel

In a recent interview, director Mark Waters, who helmed the 2003 Freaky Friday film, has disclosed that he was not invited to be a part of the upcoming 2025 sequel, Freakier Friday. Waters, now 61 years old, had expressed interest in being involved in the sequel, even in a "godfather aspect or executive producer" role, but his invitation never materialized.
Disappointed by the exclusion, Waters has since shifted his focus to developing new, original projects that he hopes will become hits worthy of future remakes. He acknowledges that it would have been "nice to be involved" in the Freaky Friday sequel, but has had to compartmentalize that missed opportunity.
Interestingly, Waters also revealed that several members of the original Freaky Friday cast reached out to him during the filming of the sequel. This suggests a continued connection between the director and the franchise, despite his lack of involvement in the latest installment.
Looking back, Waters recounted the process of landing the director role for the first Freaky Friday film. He had initially felt the original script was "terrible" and proposed significant changes, including making the mother and daughter characters more distinct, with the mother being a rock musician rather than a doctor. These creative inputs ultimately shaped the beloved 2003 film.
