In August 2025, a new Freaky Friday-inspired comedy is set to premiere, over two decades after the 2003 remake of the classic body swap film. This time, the story follows not just Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Anna (Lindsay Lohan), but also their daughters Harper (Julia Butters) and Lily (Sophia Hammons), as they all literally trade places in a single chaotic stretch.
Screenwriter Jordan Weiss' script leans heavily into the themes of teen angst, generational clashes, and the familiar trope of parental misunderstandings - only this time, the misunderstandings are quite literal. Director Nisha Ganatra stages the swaps with a playful energy, while cinematographer Matthew Clark captures the small-town settings in bright, inviting colors that feel both modern and comfortably retro.
Despite juggling four simultaneous swaps, which can be a constant source of confusion for the viewer, the comedy delivers plenty of laughs. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan effortlessly slip into their teenage counterparts, with the former delivering her best one-liners as the perpetually frazzled Tess. The young stars, Julia Butters and Sophia Hammons, also shine, capturing their adult characters' mannerisms with ease. The result is a fresh, freakier take on the Freaky Friday formula that evokes nostalgia for the original, even if it can feel a bit overstuffed at times.
