The mythological horror film Maa, directed by Vishal Furia and starring Kajol, has just begun its digital run on Netflix after completing a successful theatrical release last month. The movie is set in the same universe as the psychological supernatural thriller Shaitaan.
The story begins in the village of Chandrapur, where newborn daughters from the Shubankar family are sacrificed during Kali Puja to ward off evil powers. Forty years later, Ambika lives in the city with her husband Shubankar and their 12-year-old daughter Shweta. When Shubankar dies under mysterious circumstances, Ambika and Shweta return to Chandrapur to sell their ancestral property. There, Ambika uncovers the truth about the village's dark history of sacrifices and the terrifying spirit of Aamsaja that has haunted the region for generations.
As Shweta reaches her first menstruation, Aamsaja attempts to capture her, as his goal is to impregnate a girl from Shubankar's powerful bloodline of Kali devotees. In a climactic showdown, Ambika performs a Kali Puja ritual, undergoing a spiritual transformation to gain the strength of the goddess. She then defeats Aamsaja, saving Shweta and freeing the other missing village girls, finally breaking the curse. In a mid-credits scene, a man is seen absorbing the remaining powers of Aamsaja, connecting the film to the Shaitaan universe.
