Acclaimed Play 'Is God Is' Adapted for Film, Slated for 2026 Release

In a major development for the world of theater and film, the acclaimed stage play 'Is God Is' is set to be adapted for the big screen. Playwright Aleshea Harris, who wrote the original Off-Broadway production, will be making her feature directorial debut with the movie adaptation.

The film, which is scheduled to open in cinemas on May 15, 2026, stars Kara Young and Mallori Johnson as twin African-American sisters who were severely burned in a fire as babies, leaving them with permanent, disfiguring scars. Now 21 years old, the sisters embark on an epic quest for revenge after learning that their mother, known as 'She' or 'God', is actually alive.

The supporting cast includes Janelle Monae, Erika Alexander, Mykelti Williamson, and Josiah Cross, along with veteran actors Vivica A. Fox and Sterling K. Brown. According to reports, Harris has written the adapted screenplay for the film.

The story follows the twins as they travel from the Northeast to the South, where their mother sends them to the California desert to find the grandfather responsible for the fire that caused their injuries and her own. The film promises to be a powerful exploration of family, trauma, and the lengths one will go to for justice.

'Is God Is' first premiered Off-Broadway in 2018 at the Soho Rep, where it won multiple Obie awards and quickly caught the attention of top movie producers. Now, with Harris at the helm, the film adaptation is poised to bring this acclaimed story to an even wider audience.
