The producers altered her appearance to fit the pop star image, including bleaching her naturally dark hair blonde and adding extensions. Although this film never materialized, Deschanel retained the blonde hair for her subsequent audition for Elf.

Deschanel explained that transitioning back to her natural dark hair would have been a lengthy process after the intensive bleaching. Consequently, when she secured the role of Jovie in Elf, the production required her to maintain the blonde appearance from her audition. This unexpected turn of events led to her memorable look in the holiday classic. Furthermore, Deschanel was not the first choice for Elf; she revealed that Katie Holmes had initially been cast but later withdrew from the project, leading to Deschanel stepping in as a backup.
