Zoey Deutch has secured her next leading role, set to portray trailblazing U.S. Women's soccer executive Marla Messing in the upcoming Netflix film, 'The 99'ers.' Director Nicole Kassell will helm this true-life sports drama, an adaptation of Jeré Longman's book, 'The Girls of Summer: The US Women's Soccer Team and How It Changed the World.'
The film centers on the iconic 1990s US Women's National Soccer Team. Their monumental 1999 World Cup victory over China, achieved through a dramatic penalty shootout, captivated a global audience. This triumph not only set new attendance and TV viewership records for women's sports but also fundamentally altered its landscape.
Deutch's character, Marla Messing, was instrumental in overseeing this hugely successful tournament. Actress Emily Bader is also attached to the project, set to play soccer legend Mia Hamm. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in February in New Jersey. The script was penned by Katie Lovejoy, Dana Stevens, and Peter Hedges.
