Zoe Birkett Confirms Gareth Gates Romance, Details Heartbreak

Zoe Birkett, who rose to fame on Pop Idol, has exclusively revealed details about her past teenage romance with co-star Gareth Gates. Speaking on the Second Act podcast, Birkett confirmed that she and Gates, then aged 16 and 17 respectively, were indeed in a relationship.

She described their connection as "cute" and highlighted how they experienced their "first experiences together" within the unique environment of the Pop Idol bubble. Both being from working-class backgrounds in the north of England, they navigated the sudden opportunities side-by-side.

However, their burgeoning romance was kept secret due to management decisions. At the time, Gareth Gates was being positioned for major stardom by Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller, who aimed to keep him as a "single boy." This directive devastated Birkett, who was sidelined and unable to publicly acknowledge their relationship.

Following their split, Birkett entered a relationship with TV presenter Mark Rhodes, another Pop Idol contestant. She admitted this was a rebound, seeking comfort and validation after the heartbreak from Gates. While she initially felt cherished by Rhodes, she ultimately realized he was not her "person" and ended the engagement after a year and a half.

Despite the past heartbreaks, Birkett expressed gratitude for her overall experience, which led to a successful career. She also hinted at the possibility of a Pop Idol reunion with her former co-stars.
