Japanese-Korean actress Yuri Nakamura passed away on September 1, 2026, at the age of 44, following a long battle with rectal cancer. Her agency, Alpha Agency, announced the news on September 14, 2026, revealing that Nakamura had been diagnosed with cancer 13 years prior.
Nakamura, born Yuri Sei in Neyagawa, Osaka, was of mixed Japanese and Korean heritage. She initially pursued a music career, forming the duo YuriMari before transitioning to acting. Her career gained significant traction with her role in "Pacchigi! Love & Peace" (2007), earning her critical acclaim.
She continued to build a diverse filmography, appearing in notable works such as "After the Storm" (2016), "Fukushima 50" (2020), and "Arc" (2021). Her final screen appearances were in the Netflix drama "Beyond Goodbye" (2024) and the series "Romantics Anonymous" (2025).
Despite facing recurring health challenges, Nakamura chose to keep her illness private to avoid causing worry. After a successful surgery in January 2025, metastasis was discovered. Though a full cure was no longer possible, she focused on living a longer, vibrant life, encouraged by her doctor to continue working. In August 2026, facing a terminal diagnosis, she reportedly maintained composure and a gentle smile with loved ones.
