- New piece blends classical music with contemporary dance.

York Theatre Royal is showcasing "Suite Release," a new dance piece directed by Marcus Jarrell Willis, which pays homage to the vibrant spirit of 1990s hip-hop culture. This production, co-choreographed with Yusha-Marie Sorzano, evokes the energy and connection found on the dancefloor, incorporating sounds from hip-hop pioneers like DJ Kool Herc and artists such as Labrinth, Buju Banton, and A Tribe Called Quest.
The program also features revived works, including Jarrell Willis's "Next of Kin," a charming duet showcasing sibling-like interactions, and Ed Myhill's "Why Are People Clapping?" This latter piece, inspired by Steve Reich's "Clapping Music," offers a delightful visual interpretation of rhythm.
A new creation by choreographic duo PCK Dance introduces "Small Talk," a duet exploring a couple's domestic dynamic. This piece masterfully integrates a rich soundtrack of classical music, from Schubert and Chopin to Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel," using music to deepen the characters' emotional landscape. The choreography, with its stylized movements, draws comparisons to the work of Jiří Kylián and Mats Ek, reflecting a broader theme of cultural cycles and nostalgia.
