Yendry's 'Como Agua': A Journey Through Identity

Yendry Fiorentino's debut album, "Como Agua," released in September, represents a significant artistic statement 14 years after her initial emergence. Born in the Dominican Republic, raised in Italy, and now based in Los Angeles, Yendry uses the album to explore her complex identity. The music seamlessly blends Caribbean styles like merengue and reggae with computerized pop, reflecting her experiences as a Latina, daughter, expatriate, and artist.

"Como Agua" signifies a new chapter after years of releasing successful singles. Yendry embraced the challenges of album creation, allowing for deeper introspection and the exploration of doubts. The album's lyrical content, such as in "Sin Fronteras," addresses themes of displacement and self-discovery, resonating with immigrant experiences. Her musical influences are diverse, ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Björk and Aphex Twin.

Previously gaining recognition through Italy's "X Factor" and later releasing music with bands like Materianera, Yendry took a deliberate path to her solo album. A period of vocal health recovery and a move to Los Angeles in July 2023 provided clarity, leading her to focus on creating an authentic artistic vision. The album itself is a deeply personal narrative, weaving together Dominican roots, Italian memories, and a global outlook.

"Como Agua" features tracks delving into ancestral rhythms, personal reflections on family and past relationships, and new beginnings. Songs like "La Bendición" incorporate Afro-Dominican palo rhythms, while "Espejo" recounts meeting her biological father. The album concludes with themes of renewal, as Yendry looks towards a future that, while uncertain, is framed by her debut statement: "This is just the beginning."
