Xbox Controllers: AA Batteries Divide Gamers
1 Nov
Summary
- Xbox Series X launched with AA battery-powered controllers in 2019.
- Microsoft cites customer preference for AA batteries, offering flexibility.
- Gaming community remains divided on rechargeable vs. disposable batteries.
Microsoft's Xbox Series X, released on December 12, 2019, generated discussion due to its controller's continued reliance on AA batteries. This contrasts with competitors who had already adopted internal rechargeable batteries. Xbox's decision stems from customer feedback, with a notable segment of gamers preferring the flexibility offered by replaceable AA batteries.
This preference has been a recurring theme since the original Xbox. While premium units offered wireless play with AA batteries, rivals like Sony opted for integrated rechargeable solutions earlier. Xbox acknowledges the polarization, stating that approximately half of customers favor AAs, while the other half prefer alternatives. The company offers rechargeable battery packs as a separate option, providing flexibility for all players.
