Wuthering Heights: Braids, Beards & Brontë's Brutality

Emerald Fennell's adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" delves into Emily Brontë's classic novel, with hair and makeup artist Sian Miller crafting looks that narrate the story of destructive passion. For Heathcliff, played by Jacob Elordi, Miller developed two distinct personas: the unkempt "Jesus Elordi" and the gentlemanly "Darcy Elordi." This transformation included a prosthetic gold tooth and a meticulously recreated beard, essential for scenes shot out of sequence.

Margot Robbie's portrayal of Cathy featured an astounding array of over 35 hairstyles. Among these were the provocative "Vagina braid" and "horns" victory rolls, reflecting Cathy's complex emotional arc. Miller also incorporated subtle details like freckles for characters exposed to the elements, which faded as Cathy spent more time indoors.

Miller's work extended to the narrative of Cathy's tragic end. For her death scene, her skin was made to resemble "wet concrete" with sepsis accurately depicted using prosthetics. Even Cathy's hair was intentionally left unwashed for this critical sequence, a stark contrast to her previous glamorous appearances.
