WoW Classic Plus: Classes get depth, not modernization
11 Oct
Summary
- Blizzard will not modernize classes in WoW: Forever.
- Some Classic classes will gain more engaging mechanics.
- The game aims for a 'Classic Plus' experience.

Blizzard Entertainment has detailed its approach for World of Warcraft: Forever, confirming that core class mechanics will not be modernized to maintain the game's "Classic" ethos. Instead, the development team intends to introduce "engaging depth" to certain classes that were perceived as overly simple in the original Classic era. This strategy is part of a "Classic Plus" vision, built on four design pillars: nurturing social experiences, approachability, the world as the main character, and journey before destination. These pillars guide the team in enhancing the vanilla experience while adhering to its established core design, pacing, and tone.
The team emphasized a preference for classes that are "simpler, but with engaging depth," indicating that new mechanics will be added thoughtfully. Encounter design will align with the "Approachable and Familiar" pillar, drawing from extensive playtesting of Classic dungeons and raids. Blizzard aims to empower players with creativity and surprise, ensuring all changes support the core pillars and retain the pacing and combat speed of original WoW. While specializations will see improvements and dual specialization remains available, there are no plans to expand beyond the existing system, with Blizzard aiming to make talent decisions meaningful by implementing a weekly re-spec cost.
Significant class changes are planned for the beta phase, with updates batched together rather than released incrementally. Blizzard anticipates frequent balance adjustments, particularly in the initial six months post-launch, with weekly changes planned initially. However, the long-term objective is to implement minimal design changes after the game officially goes live on November 4, 2026. This phased approach allows for data gathering and iterative improvements to ensure the game's longevity and player satisfaction.
