The World's Ugliest Dog contest recently celebrated its 50th anniversary at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa, California. This year, the coveted title was awarded to Jinny Lu, a 6-year-old pug originally from South Korea.

Jinny Lu's journey is one of remarkable resilience. She was rescued from the dog meat trade and adopted through Pug Rescue four years ago. Her owner, Michelle Grady, noted that Jinny Lu has transformed from an extremely shy dog into a "constant source of mischief and joy." Her distinctive floppy tongue and bulging eyes, once perhaps a cause for concern, are now celebrated as part of her unique charm.

The contest organizers emphasize that the event is not about mocking dogs but about celebrating their wonderful characters and the importance of adoption. Jinny Lu herself reportedly loves the competition and everything the event stands for. She has also been involved in educational programs, teaching children about pet adoption and bringing joy to hospice patients.

Jinny Lu succeeds Petunia, a hairless Frenchie-English Bulldog mix, who won in 2025. Petunia was rescued from a hoarder home and had surgery to correct breathing difficulties due to an elongated palate. The contest continues to remind attendees that embracing individuality and providing loving homes are the true measures of beauty.
