"Wonder" Musical Casts Actors with Facial Differences
23 Feb
Summary
- The musical "Wonder" features actors with facial differences in the lead role.
- Two young actors, Max Voehl and Garrett McNally, were cast as Auggie Pullman.
- The production aimed to authentically represent characters with craniofacial conditions.

The American Repertory Theater's production of the musical "Wonder" made a significant casting choice by selecting young actors Max Voehl and Garrett McNally, both of whom have facial differences, to portray the character Auggie Pullman. This decision contrasted with the film adaptation, which used makeup and prosthetics on an actor without such conditions.
Voehl, who was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate, and McNally, who has Treacher Collins syndrome, both related deeply to Auggie's experiences of enduring surgeries and bullying. Their casting aimed for authentic representation, a move championed by consultant Matthew Joffee, who has Moebius syndrome, to avoid alienating the craniofacial community.
Director Taibi Magar found the story's message of kindness and resilience particularly resonant during the pandemic. The musical explores Auggie's journey at school and is also told from the perspectives of his sister Via and his friend Jack, highlighting themes of empathy and acceptance.
Both Voehl and McNally expressed that playing Auggie provided them a platform to change perceptions about individuals with facial differences. They emphasized that inner qualities matter more than outward appearance. The show concluded its two-month run on February 15, leaving a lasting impact on audiences, including hundreds of school children who attended.
