The 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction shortlist has been revealed, featuring a strong contingent of debut authors and independent publishers. Six novels contend for the £30,000 award, with US writers Susan Choi and Lily King among the nominees. Choi is recognized for her historical family saga, "Flashlight," while King's romance novel, "Heart the Lover," also earned a spot.
Four debut authors, Addie E Citchens, Virginia Evans, Marcia Hutchinson, and Rozie Kelly, join the established writers. Their shortlisted works explore diverse themes, including experiences in the American South, aging through correspondence, a coming-of-age story set in 1960s Bradford, and an academic infatuation.
The prize, founded in 1996, aims to celebrate "the complexity and beauty of the female experience." This year's selection notably includes four titles from independent presses. The winner will be announced on June 11, 2026, in London.
