The reimagined Wizard of Oz at Las Vegas's Sphere has captivated audiences, selling 2.2 million tickets and earning $290 million since its debut last August. Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan revealed these figures, emphasizing the AI-enhanced production as a foundational element for the company's long-term strategy.
This 75-minute version, a significant departure from the original film, leverages the Sphere's immense screen for a deeply immersive and interactive experience. It features advanced effects like drone-controlled monkeys and simulated wind, alongside bonus lobby attractions. Dolan noted that the current show's popularity might influence the development of a "Wizard of Oz 2.0."
Looking ahead, Sphere plans to release an extreme sports documentary titled "From The Edge" in late 2026, potentially extending into early 2027. The company is actively in discussions with other intellectual property holders to bring new projects to its venues.
Sphere is also expanding its global presence with a new location under construction in Abu Dhabi and plans for a smaller venue in Maryland, anticipated within four years. Despite current capacity constraints, there is strong interest from IP holders eager to explore this novel medium.
