26 Feb
Summary
- Rapper Wiz Khalifa's appeal against a jail sentence was rejected.
- The sentence was for drug possession following a July 2024 festival.
- Romanian law carries harsh penalties for drug possession offenses.

A Romanian court has rejected rapper Wiz Khalifa's appeal to annul his nine-month jail sentence for drug possession. The Constanta Court of Appeal made its decision on Thursday, also ruling unfounded a request to suspend the sentence. Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was convicted in December 2024. His conviction stemmed from an incident in July 2024, when he was stopped by police after allegedly smoking cannabis on stage at a festival in Constanta County. Prosecutors stated that over 18 grams of cannabis were found in his possession, with some consumed during his performance. The court convicted him of "possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption." This latest ruling follows a previous criminal fine of 3,600 lei ($830) issued by a lower court in April 2024 for illegal drug possession, a decision that prosecutors appealed seeking a harsher sentence. Romania enforces strict drug laws, with personal cannabis use punishable by three months to two years in prison or a fine. It remains unclear if Romanian authorities will seek extradition, given Khalifa's U.S. citizenship and non-residence in Romania.
