Festival Republic managing director Melvin Benn has reflected on the controversy surrounding the booking of Ye (formerly Kanye West) as a headliner for Wireless Festival 2026. Benn stated that timing was a crucial lesson learned from the incident, advocating for forgiveness as an essential human virtue.
Wireless Festival, originally scheduled for July 10-12, faced significant backlash after announcing Ye's headline slot. Criticisms came from London mayor Sadiq Khan and various Jewish organizations due to Ye's history of antisemitic remarks. Several sponsors, including Pepsi and PayPal, withdrew their support.
Benn had defended the decision, emphasizing the possibility of change and accountability, and asking for forgiveness for the artist. However, on April 7, the British government confirmed Ye's exclusion from the UK due to his past comments, citing that his presence would not be conducive to public good.
Following this confirmation, Festival Republic canceled the 2026 Wireless Festival and initiated ticket refunds. Benn remains confident about the festival's future return, stating that lessons have been learned from the recent challenges.
