William Shatner, at 95, has launched into the heavy metal scene with his band, The *uckers. The ensemble made their live debut at Riot Fest, performing a set that included original songs and covers of classics by Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, and Metallica. Shatner's entry into heavy metal began when his record label, Cleopatra Records, proposed a heavy metal album, prompting him to ask, "What the f--- is heavy metal?" This question became the title of his forthcoming album.
The album, "What the F is Heavy Metal," features six original songs co-written with Robert Sharenow, alongside contributions from over 50 musicians, including Queen's Brian May. The band, comprising guitarists Marcus Nand and Britt Lightning, bassist Phil Soussan, and drummer Fred Aching, performed on September 20th in Chicago. Shatner described the experience as a "huge success," validating his exploration into the energetic genre.
Beyond music, Shatner is actively promoting hearing health. He partnered with Audien Hearing, sharing his personal journey with tinnitus and hearing loss, which began decades ago during a "Star Trek" filming incident. He estimates a 20-30% hearing loss and highlights how hearing aids have improved his appreciation of everyday sounds, despite loud music like heavy metal temporarily intensifying his tinnitus.
