A novel collaboration has emerged between actor Willem Dafoe and Islay Scotch producer Laphroaig, resulting in the "Willem by Willem" whisky release. Dafoe actively participated in selecting the spirits, aiming for a taste that evokes curiosity. This 14-year-old Scotch was initially matured in ex-bourbon casks before undergoing a finish in Oloroso sherry barrels. It is bottled at 53.7% ABV and will begin distribution to U.S. retailers in the second week of June.
The whisky offers a rich aroma of peat and sweetness, with notes of campfire smoke, grilled peaches, and cherry, balanced by hints of creosote and iodine. The palate showcases sherry influence with fruit syrups and a viscous mouthfeel, with smoke building towards the finish. Despite its complex profile and $156 MSRP, the whisky has been described as "really lovely."
Beyond the bottling, a contest invites fans to creatively interpret the whisky's taste. The most original submission could lead to an opportunity to join Dafoe in a forthcoming short film. Contest entries are accepted online through August 2nd via the distillery's website.
