The stop-motion fantasy adventure Wildwood showcases an extraordinary eagle puppet, "The General," meticulously crafted with 3,000 hand-laid feathers. This creation, boasting a five-foot wingspan, is described as Laika's most advanced feathered creature to date, a significant feat given the studio's prior experience primarily with smaller fowl.
Bringing "The General" to life involved a year of intensive planning and sophisticated visual effects. The production team utilized 12 feet of physical camera track and 30 feet for the puppet gimbal, managing intricate camera movements and consistent lighting for dynamic chase sequences. Many elements were physically built and then digitally integrated.
Angela Bassett provided the voice for the mighty eagle, recording her lines in 2021. She noted the challenge of conveying character through voice alone, emphasizing the collaborative effort with Laika's artists. Bassett expressed a profound appreciation for the animators' skill in translating her vocal performance into a detailed, living character for the screen.
