An action shot capturing a young lynx playing with its prey has won the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year's public vote. The image, taken by Austrian photographer Josef Stefan in Ciudad Real, Spain, depicts the Iberian lynx tossing a rodent into the air before eating it. This behavior is common for the species and was observed over two weeks of patient photography.
Stefan described the encounter as the realization of a long-held dream to photograph one of the world's rarest wild cats. He noted the significant conservation efforts that have helped the Iberian lynx population recover to over 2,000 individuals, a remarkable comeback from being on the brink of extinction in the early 2000s. The photograph is a powerful symbol of successful conservation.
The winning image and four highly commended photographs, including flamingos under power lines and polar bears in summer heat, will be exhibited at the Natural History Museum in London until July 12. This award celebrates exceptional wildlife photography and the ongoing efforts to protect endangered species like the Iberian lynx.
