DreamWorks Animation has announced a sequel to the acclaimed 2024 film "The Wild Robot," titled "The Wild Robot Escapes." The new installment will be directed by Troy Quane, who co-directed the Oscar-nominated "Nimona." Original director Chris Sanders, who helmed the first film, will transition to writing the screenplay for the sequel.
Heidi Jo Gilbert, who served as head of story on the original, will be the co-director. The first film, based on Peter Brown's book, was praised for its unique animation and emotional narrative, earning $320 million worldwide and securing three Oscar nominations. Sanders, also known for "Lilo & Stitch" and "How to Train Your Dragon," is also set to write a live-action "Lilo & Stitch" sequel for Disney.
"The Wild Robot Escapes" will follow Roz and her adopted bird-son Brightbill as they attempt to flee a dairy farm and return to their island home, as depicted in Brown's second book in the trilogy. Quane brings experience from various studios, while Gilbert is recognized for her significant contributions to storyboarding and story work on multiple successful animated features and series, including "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish."
No release date has been announced for "The Wild Robot Escapes," but the creative team behind the first film's success is poised to deliver another compelling story.
