CIA Agents, Moai Statues, and a 1973 Coup: A New Thriller

Martin McDonagh's latest film, "Wild Horse Nine," made its debut at the Venice Film Festival. The movie stars John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as Chris and Lee, two CIA partners stationed in Santiago, Chile, shortly before the 1973 military coup. Their assignment takes them to the remote Easter Island, where the monumental Moai statues serve as a backdrop for their reckoning with a murky shared past.

Director McDonagh acknowledged that while the film was conceived around a trip to Easter Island over a decade ago, its themes of covert operations and geopolitical interference have gained unexpected contemporary relevance. He observed a shift in the overt nature of such actions today compared to the more secretive methods of the 1970s, expressing concern over what he perceives as a decline in intelligence and an increase in blatant actions.

The project evolved through several script versions before McDonagh settled on the narrative of two bumbling CIA agents. He aimed to shed light on the often-undiscussed global activities of the CIA, citing events in Guatemala, the Congo, and the Bay of Pigs as examples that warrant more public scrutiny, contrasting this with the greater awareness of KGB operations.

"Wild Horse Nine" is slated for a U.S. theatrical release on November 6th, positioned as a potential awards season contender. Following its Venice premiere, the film is set to screen at the Telluride and Toronto International Film Festivals, further cementing its place in the fall cinematic landscape. The ensemble cast also features Steve Buscemi and Parker Posey, with Tom Waits notably absent.
